37 Shows That You Might Want To Check Out This Summer (Part 1)

After perusing the summer 2014 schedule over at TV Guide, it has occurred to me that there is a crap-ton of quality new and returning programming this summer which is continuing a year-over-year trend of the broadcast and cable networks dedicating quality content to the until recently largely under-appreciated television audience looking for new content. Gone are the days of summer being a wasteland of reruns and reality shows as the networks have finally figured out that after forty years of processed foods and decreasing exercise as a culture during the summer, we are now more likely to park our collective fat asses on the sofa and watch TV instead of doing things that require physical exertion.  So, thank you network and cable television executives for encouraging our eventual physical demise as a society.

All snarkiness aside, the renaissance of the summer television schedule has its origins in the economic downturn throughout the last decade and families looking to save money on their entertainment by forgoing things like family vacations and multiple trips to the their local multiplex during the year.  Families in general began to look at home entertainment as an alternative expense and began to invest for the long-term instead of spending frivolously with no return. During the late 2000s sales of large screen televisions and home theater system skyrocketed whereas other industries remained stagnant and lost ground.

This change in consumer attitude has created an opportunity for a tremendous amount of programming that would have never seen the light of day in years past. Needless to say, I’m all for it.

So, here’s how this going to work:

This is one part of a multi-part series that will post over several weeks.  Some parts (like this one) will have more show recommendations than others simply for the fact that I’m trying to avoid giving you a heads-up on a show that has already begun (not much of a head’s up if it’s after-the-fact) and I don’t want to get more behind than I already am. You will notice that there is a lack of comedies on this list.  The reason for that is simple: summer comedies usually are f*cking horrible. There are a few exceptions which I will note but don’t expect a lot from me in that department.

Oh, and if you’re wondering why your favorite drama or drama you’re looking forward to isn’t on the list, it’s because you probably have sh*tty taste and those shows you want to see mentioned are awful or  certainly will be.

For new series, I will include commentary on what a series has going for it and what it has going against it.

24LAD24: Live Another Day (FOX – Mondays, 9:00 p.m. beginning May 5th)

Jack Bauer and IGN’s fifth greatest show of all time returned on May 5th after being canceled four years ago for what the producers have called a “limited run event.”  24 was always one of my favorite shows on television but a couple of things occurred to me after I crammed in all eight previous seasons over the course of four weeks; first, there is a lot of unnecessary filler content throughout the 24 episodes of any given season that was completely unnecessary in order to advance the story and they dragged down the series (see: the entire Kim Bauer storyline in season two). Second, the major subplots were also great but they were also used as filler to get the season through 24 episodes. That extra content could have been recrafted into an entirely different season but they crammed in no less than four major plotlines into one day and it was absurd at times. I remember watching season six thinking they could have ended the whole season at episode 18 and that was without removing the other filler that polluted that season.

This realization of all of the unnecessary content forced me to conclude that 24 is probably far better suited for 12 to 13 episodes just as 24: Live Another Day is by design.  It’s simply more efficient storytelling for a very frenetic series that could use a little more structure and precision.  There’s also the other issue that the reason that 24 was canceled in the first place was not because the ratings were particularly bad, it’s that the show was incredibly expensive to produce, was getting more expensive every year and the returns on the investment just weren’t there any more.  You cut that order in half and you saved half the cost of your series right there and you can make your franchise profitable again.

So far, Live Another Day has been as advertised and what you would expect from the franchise, despite the fact that I was a little concerned because of the slow start (FFS, Bauer didn’t even say a word until 45 minutes into the first hour) and what was appearing to be too much time once again dedicated to filler early on.  Since episode three it has picked up dramatically and  I expect the remaining episodes of season nine to live up to its expectations but if they really want to impress the f*ck out of me then they need to bring back Tony Almeida and I don’t care how they do it.

Motive (ABC – Wednesdays, 10:00 p.m. beginning May 21st)

MOTIVeI saw a grand total of one episode of this show last year and I actually liked it a lot but my schedule was full and didn’t have the time to fit it in.  I despise police procedurals for the most part but the concept of the series, showing different aspects of the crime from different characters perspectives, is reminiscent of the short-lived but brilliant NBC series from 2002, Boomtown.  I think it’s safe to say that if Boomtown had a short-order 13 episode summer schedule it would have run for several seasons but, alas, that kind of programming didn’t exist in the early 2000s so we all lost.  Motive cleverly fills that hole in for this generation of television audiences and does so nicely.

gang relatedGang Related (FOX – Thursdays, 9:00 p.m. beginning May 22nd)

Gang Related is a complex serialized drama revolving around a former gang member turned cop and the war between the police and organized crime in Los Angeles.  The premise seems to ooze with clichés and recycles elements of other similar stories (see: The Departed) but it has a strong cast (Lost‘s Terry O’Quinn and The Shield‘s Catherine Dent in particular) and goddammit if those trailers don’t make it look compelling.  The first two episodes are still sitting on the DVR so I can’t give an assessment but like the title of the article says, you might want to check it out.

What it’s got going for it:  As noted, the series has a strong cast and it’s probably not that expensive to produce considering the shortened summer scheduling.  Audience reaction has been positive thus far.

What it’s got going against it: Incredibly mixed reviews from critics noting the same problems that I expressed without having seen a single episode.  It’s also on FOX and FOX has a tendency to sh*t their pants and cancel shows if they show any signs of losing their audience.

WWPThe Wil Wheaton Project (Tuesdays, 10:00 p.m. beginning May 27th)

Do you like clip shows?  Well, if you do, The Wil Wheaton Project is for you! That is, of course, if you’re a big Science Fiction/Genre geek like I am.  The easiest way to describe this series is to think of The Soup but specifically for nerds and when I say think of The Soup, I mean it’s EXACTLY like that series.  I haven’t looked closely into it but there’s no doubt that the two series are using the same producers and writers as the style, writing and format are IDENTICAL.  No, complaints here, though.  This isn’t just one of those shows I suggest checking out, I highly recommend this series.

What it’s got going for it: I watched the first episode the other day and it was absolutely hilarious and done in such a manner that it doesn’t alienate a non-SciFi/Genre audience.   This is an incredibly inexpensive show to produce and SyFy like cheap shows. Wil Wheaton’s  ScifFi pedigree gives the series instant credibility (having Chris Hardwick make an appearance on your pilot doesn’t hurt either).

What it’s got going against it: Nothing.  Shut up and enjoy it.

rogueRogue (DirecTV – Wednesdays, 8:00 p.m. beginning May 28th)

Wednesday marked the beginning of the second season of DirecTV’s original drama, Rogue.  I only became a subscriber to DirecTV about a month ago and since I think torrenting is the equivalent of setting live puppies on fire and beating up old ladies I would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, suggest anyone do anything, like say, perhaps visit a site like The Pirate Bay to get caught up.  That being said, as described, the series looks pretty compelling (if not particularly original) as far as serialized detective shows are concerned with an undercover cop that gets entangled with organized crime. If, like me, you haven’t seen this series yet and you want to get caught up… oh, I’m sure you’ll find a way.

CROSSBONESCrossbones (NBC – Fridays, 10:00 p.m. beginning May 30th)

Until recently, my only interest in pirates was the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland which to this day is my favorite ride of all time.  I have seen several pirate movies over the years including the Disney films of the same title and I’ve enjoyed them but once again, I’ve had no interest in the genre. Perhaps that’s because my only exposure to Pirates has been through the fantasy colored lenses that Disney provides but honestly, after becoming immersed in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, I have really come to appreciate the history surrounding West Indies pirates. Crossbones is a series revolving around the legendary Blackbeard and stars John Malkovich in his first lead role on television.  Looks like fun.

What it’s got going for it: Pirates are popular right now and John Malkovich brings a level of gravitas to the series that will get the attention of audiences.

What it’s got going against it: Mixed reviews so far and period pieces are expensive to produce.  I’m not particularly comfortable with the Friday night slot during the summer, either and NBC is unpredictable with their programming choices.

CBS: Done and Done… Thomas Gibson Signs Deal To Return To Criminal Minds For Seventh Season

On June 8th we reported that Thomas Gibson had still not signed on to reprise his long-running role as Special Agent Aaron Hotchner, which had the potential to hold up production of the seventh season due to air in the Fall.  As we suspected, Deadline is reporting that Gibson has signed a new deal and will of course, be returning in September.

HBO: True Blood Seasons 1 – 3… In Under Five Minutes (VIDEO)

Approved by Gamera!

For this generation of television audiences with short attention spans, HBO has made catching up on True Blood ahead of the season four premiere this Sunday, June 26th easy by releasing the cool little video below that provides a synopsis of the important stuff that’s been going on over the last three seasons.  This has been approved by our, True Blood corespondent, Gamera who as we noted, will be featured prominently in season five.

CBS: Laurence Fishburne Out On CSI, Thomas Gibson Still Not Signed For Criminal Minds As Seventh Season Production Looms

More major cast member news for scripted drama, this time from CBS.

Laurence, we feel the same way about CSI.

Deadline is reporting that Academy Award-nominated Laurence Fishburne, who took over the lead role from Wiiliam Petersen on CSI two and a half years ago will not be returning for CSI‘s 12th season this Fall.  Fishburne’s one-year contract has come to an end and he has decided not to renew it in order to return to feature films, full-time.  No word on who will be replacing him and we really don’t care.  In fact, we question the mental stability of the people who still watch this franchise.  It’s a live-action Scooby Doo minus the dog, the pothead and the ascot.  Watching this show actually makes you dumber.

In other CBS scripted drama news, Thomas Gibson, star of Criminal Minds (a show we actually like and are looking forward to being on Netflix Streaming in the near future in accordance with CBS deal) has still not signed a contract to return for a seventh season and talks are reportedly at a standstill.  This is of concern because production of the new season began last week and the writers don’t know whether his character, Special Agent Aaron Hotchner, will be returning and it makes it a little difficult to produce content if you don’t know who your lead is.  We hope this gets resolved shortly as we like him on this show and it makes us completely forget that he was Greg on Dharma & Greg.

SCOOP! E3 News: SyFy/Trion Worlds To Reveal Defiance, Crossover MMOG/Television Series (VIDEO/PHOTOS)

We want to give a big thanks to our good friend and fellow SciFi aficionado, Mike Willick of Rochester, New York for bringing this to our attention.

Next week, at E3 in Los Angeles, SyFy and Trion Worlds, Inc. will reveal the world’s first Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG)/live-action scripted television series, Defiance.  The best way we can think of to explain this is like this:  consider that a new Star Trek series debuted at the same time Star Trek Online debuted and that everything that happens in the storyline of the game is part of the storyline in the series as well and the characters crossover between both the game and the series.  This is a real-time, interactive universe and each medium is dependent on the other.  From The Hollywood Reporter:

Set on a future Earth, Defiance introduces players and Syfy viewers to a world ravaged by decades of conflict, where humans and aliens live together in a world the likes of which no one has seen. The game combines the frenetic action of a top-tier console shooter with the persistence, scale, and customization of an MMO, while its TV counterpart exudes the scope, story, and drama of a classic sci-fi epic. The game’s story will take place in the San Francisco bay area, while the TV series will be set just outside of St. Louis, MO. Because they exist in a single universe, the show and the game will influence and evolve each other over time, with actions in both mediums driving the overall story of Defiance.

THR has the full story here and we highly recommend you read it in order to truly grasp the full scope of the project and SyFy’s expansion of the brand with their SyFyGames division and why it’s such a big deal. We love THR and this is honestly one of the most comprehensive pieces they’ve ever done and we’d have to plagiarize the whole thing verbatim to do it justice and we’re not going to do that.

Here’s a great video that we uploaded to The Tastic’s new YouTube Channel from Trion Worlds explaining the whole concept and it includes a brief video clip of the new television series.  Also, if you scroll down, we’ve got a gallery of screenshots from the game as well.

We’re a little embarrassed about this as well because this news completely slipped past us not only when we initially read the press release from SyFy announcing their 2011 – 2012 schedule, but we also missed it when we published it on Friday.

As well, Syfy is partnering with game developer Trion Worldwide for a new entertainment franchise, Defiance, that will seamlessly pair a primetime series with an online video game, scheduled for 2011.

… And therein lies the problem with excessively long, press releases (this one coming in at 2,977 words); nobody wants to read the damned things and therefore we miss exciting news like this that gets buried between SyFy bragging about their increased audience numbers and something called Imagination Spotlight that we don’t care about either.  Seriously, they put their whole stinking upfront advertising event into this press release.  Not necessary and frankly, it’s annoying.

So, of course, we now eagerly await the press conference at E3 and when we have more details about a premiere/release date, we’ll let you know.

SyFy Acquires Canadian Supernatural Hit Lost Girl

On May 18th, SyFy announced that they were picking up both seasons (26 episodes) of the Canadian supernatural hit, Lost Girl for broadcast in the U.S.  We’re not familiar with this show however it seems rather interesting and at least it’s another new scripted drama added to SyFy’s very light new schedule for 2011 – 2012.  No word on a premiere date as of yet.

Via Press Release:

SYFY ACQUIRES SUPERNATURAL DRAMA SERIES LOST GIRL FROM PRODIGY PICTURES

NEW YORK – May 18, 2011 – Syfy has acquired both seasons (26 episodes) of the hit Canadian supernatural drama Lost Girl from Prodigy Pictures, it was announced today by Thomas Vitale, Executive Vice President, Programming and Original Movies, Syfy.

Lost Girl stars supernatural seductress Bo (played by Anna Silk/The Ghost Whisperer), a Succubus (a powerful female entity in folklore) who feeds off sexual energy. Raised by human parents, Bo had no reason to believe she was anything other than the girl next door — until she “drained” her first boyfriend to death.

Bo has since hit the road alone and afraid. She discovers she is one of the Fae, creatures of legend and folklore, who pass as humans while feeding off them in secret, as they have for millennia. She is faced with choosing an allegiance between the Dark or Light Fae clans. Bo decides to take the middle path between humans and the Fae while embarking on a personal mission to unlock the secrets of her origin, protecting humans along the way.

Lost Girl co-stars Kris Holden-Ried as Dyson, a shape-shifting Fae, homicide detective and Bo’s love interest; Ksenia Solo as Kenzi, Bo’s human confidante and street-smart survivor, Zoie Palmer as Lauren, a human doctor who competes for Bo’s heart; Rick Howland as Trick, the mysterious owner and bartender at The Dal Riata tavern, with a secretive past that is yet to be unlocked, and K.C. Collins as Hale, a handsome male “Siren” who is the eternal bachelor, ultimate wingman and Dyson’s partner on the force.

Notable guest stars include Emmanuelle Vaugier as “The Morrigan”, the leader of the Dark Fae.

Said Vitale: “In one year, Lost Girl has electrified viewers in Canada and around the world. We’re delighted to bring this fascinating, high-octane series, which depicts a unique world and memorable heroine, to the Syfyaudience.”

“We’re thrilled to have Syfy on board as our broadcast partner in the U.S. Lost Girl is a unique series that thrusts a strong, independent female lead into uncompromising circumstances. It’s a series that takes risks with unconventional storylines and provocative character development,” said Jay Firestone, Executive Producer.

This series is developed and produced by Prodigy Pictures, in association with Shaw Media and Showcase. This acquisition agreement was brokered by Tim Mudd of Mudd Media.

SyFy 2011 – 2012 Complete Schedule

Again, like the Summer schedule, we are very late on the draw on this, however, here’s the full scoop on all of the programming for SyFy for 2011 – 2012.  There’s not a whole lot more that we can say about this that we didn’t say in the article about the Summer schedule, except that new scripted drama is represented by a grand total of two shows this season, Alphas, premiering in July, and the highly-anticipated Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, which does not have an official announced date for release but we expect it in early 2012.

Although we don’t subscribe to the nonsense that there is no Science Fiction on the former SciFi network anymore, it is very curious that there are only two new scripted dramas (and SyFy has picked up the first two seasons of the Canadian hit, Lost Girl although they haven’t announced a premiere date for it as of yet) and three, what appear to be science fiction-themed comedies (seriously?).  The rest of the programming is made up primarily of goofy Saturday movies and reality series.  This disappoints us and seems a little odd as well, considering that every other network out there has drastically cut the amount of reality shows from their schedule and cut the amount of reality shows that they have ordered and put into development status.  This schedule is VERY reality-heavy and it’s not a matter of this not appealing to science fiction audience, it’s a matter of it not appealing to any audience.  Seriously, how many reality shows can an audience take?  For preview videos and trailers of the shows that will be airing this summer (including some full episodes) check out the our article on the SyFy summer schedule.

CORRECTION: Due to the obnoxious length of SyFy’s press release below, we completely missed the announcement regarding the new live-action, scripted action series/massive multiplayer online game (MMOG), Defiance. Due to this development, we are a whole lot less disappointed in the lack of new scripted drama.   Read all about it, here.

SyFy Summer Schedule With VIDEOS!

(Scroll Down and Pause The Hulu Video For Ghost Hunters International That Just Autoplayed!)

Yeah, yeah, yeah… we know that we are very late with this but before the Summer Cable season heats up, we had a moral obligation to get out SyFy’s Summer schedule.

A few notes:

  • First, we simply do not tolerate this garbage notion that’s promoted  on other blogs and by the fanboys that there’s no Science Fiction on SyFy anymore because they have one hour of wrestling per week and the final nail in the coffin was when the net work changed it’s name from SciFi to SyFy. We’re preparing an entire piece dispelling these particular myths but if you feel a need to peddle this crap, bring it on and we’ll be glad to embarrass you.
  • Great to see returning scripted dramas Warehouse 13 and Eureka coming back (even though we knew a long time ago they were).  We didn’t care for Haven, but we are willing to give it another shot and we’ll update our review accordingly if appropriate.
  • New scripted drama series Alphas will premiere on Monday July 11th along with WH13 and Eureka.  It doesn’t look like a particularly original concept, but it does look like a lot of fun.
  • The reality shows are the reality shows.  SciFi does a pretty good job with them and they are hugely successful for the network but it’s nothing for us to get excited over.  We’ll pick up an episode here or there, but that’s about it.
  • Of course, the one thing that SyFy excels in is guilty-pleasure, over-the-top, ridiculous original SyFy/Horror films.  This summer is no different and although a lot of our friends love these dopey things, we generally pass, however…
  • We have to say that Red Faction: Origins based on the popular video game franchise looks pretty damned good, all things considering.  We’re not suggesting Emmy nominations but the production values look like they are up there with BSG production values so we’ll definitely be watching.  Having Robert Patrick as your lead doesn’t hurt you either.
  • Alright, we admit it, Age of Dragons starring Danny Glover looks pretty good as well although it’s got that Reign of Fire feel to it.  The thing is that ROF is actually a pretty good flick and grossly underrated (check it it out.  FUll film of ROF on YouTube, here!) We’ll give this retelling of Melville’s Moby Dick (no kidding… not only is it billed as such but all of the characters names are straight of the classic novel) a shot.
  • Although we missed the the Star Trek film marathon (pfffbbbt… who cares?  we have them all on Blu-Ray to begin with), the perennial Twilight Zone marathon will return on July 4th as it should.  If you can’t wait until then, Netflix has all 138 episodes in glorious HD availabel for streaming.  We’ve really re-discovered this epic series as of late thanks to Netflix and we’ll be doing a piece on the twenty greatest episodes of TTZ in the near future and our choices and omissions may surprise you.

Geek Alert! Torchwood: Miracle Day Official Trailer Released

One day, nobody dies. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next, people keep aging — they get hurt and sick — but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight.

With all the extra people, resources are finite. It’s said that in four month’s time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can’t be a natural event – someone’s got to be behind it. It’s a race against time as C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy. The answers lie within an old, secret British institute. As Rex keeps asking “What is Torchwood?”, he’s drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human, forever. – Starz

Starz has released an official trailer for the upcoming series Torchwood: Miracle Day that actually contains footage from the new series as opposed to every other trailer out there. Now, when we say ‘new series,’ we use the phrase loosely as the series is only new to the U.S. in first-run.  It’s actually the fourth season of the BBC SciFi hit, Torchwood, which is a spinoff of the BBC SciFi hit Dr. Who. As an aside, here’s the thing we don’t get:  they call a season a ‘series’ in th U.K. So, this begs the question,  if they call a season a series what do the call a series?  Did we mention that their food is awful as well.

Anyway, we started watching Torchwood a few months ago on Netflix streaming and we love it and one of the things that’s so great about it is that the U.K., ironically, does not have the same kind of puritanical standards for broadcast television that we have here in the U.S.  Unlike Dr. Who, this show simply is not appropriate family viewing in the U.S. without serious editing (which is exactly what we assume they did when they aired the first three seasons on BBC America).  Honestly, this show can’t even be aired on F/X, and is the domain of premium cable exclusively and that’s why we’re thrilled that Starz picked this up instead of FOX, which was the original intention.  It would have been a watered-down mess if it had been on a Big-5 network.

Just by watching this trailer, it’s obvious that the U.S. treatment of this show is going to provide a much-deserved blockbuster film-feel upgrade, and look… Bill Pullman’s working again!  Now, we need to make clear that fans who have never watched the series shouldn’t be scared off by jumping into the fourth seasons.  First the show has been like The X-Files in both substance and style and even though there is a continuing story-arc, the episodes have stood on their own.  Now, this new season, as to be expected from any premium cable drama will obviously feature a self-contained story-arc over the course of the ten-episode season and even though you may have not watched it before, rest assured that the producers will fill you in on the pertinent details that you’ll need.  But, don’t forget, you can always get yourself acquainted by checking out the series on Netflix.  I mean, seriously… we’re only talking about 31 episodes and you have over a month to do it and there’s not that much else on TV, right now.

Torchwood: Miracle Day premieres on Starz on Friday July 8th at 10:00 p.m.  and we highly recommend it.  You’re going to have a blast.  By the way, if you’re one of the few people who have an Internet connection and don’t have Netflix, you can still watch full episodes of seasons one through three right on YouTube as apparently no one’s caught up to the fact that users have uploaded it.  Check it out here.
